He was lost in thought about his phone, which made him act quickly. He brought it to his hand, pulled it from his coat pocket, and glanced at Boss. Then, he quickly looked at Maheer, keeping an eye on what he was preparing in the kitchen. He brought the phone to his ear respectfully and said:
"Long life to you, Boss, our Hajia, our mother, our pride."
He paused for a moment, listening to the conversation from the other side, then looked up and said:
"Yes, I see here with him. Yes, that’s Liquid X in the kitchen."
He remained silent, listening further, then got up and went into the kitchen without telling Maheer. He said:
"She wants to talk to you."
Maheer looked at him disdainfully, as if he didn’t want to respond. After some hesitation, he asked:
"Who?"
With a sly smile that annoyed him, Nas said:
"Boss, Oga, call her. She’s Hajia."
With his usual air of disdain, he lifted his head and continued stirring the substance on the stove. He opened his mouth, glaring at Maheer, letting nearly a minute of pure contempt pass, then said:
"Tell her I’m busy."
He returned the phone to his ear. Nas asked respectfully:
"Boss, did you hear that?"
After a pause, Maheer finally said:
"Okay."
He pulled the phone away from his ear, pressed the speaker button, and said:
"Boss, it’s on speaker."
A woman’s voice, probably not older than 45–46, with authority and command, said:
"Naseer, put the phone down and step aside, I want to talk to him."
Nas quickly rolled his eyes and said:
"Okay, Boss."
He spoke respectfully, then placed the phone on the table and left the kitchen, closing the door behind him.
Almost a minute after he left, the woman let out a slow sigh, speaking in her calm, soothing tone:
"Pablo, do you want to drive me crazy? You’ve completely lost it! Since I left that city, you’ve ignored me—you don’t answer WhatsApp messages, texts, or my calls. Why are you making it so difficult for me? You’re teasing me, upsetting me in front of Nas. Do you want to humiliate me as you did before, thinking I know nothing?"
She paused, releasing a deep sigh, knowing he still hadn’t spoken. She could feel how much her words pained him, which made her almost crazy. She continued:
"Why did you deceive me? I came to Las Vegas for peace and to finalize a deal with El Chapo, Maheer!"
She shouted his name so strongly that, for the first time, he paused his stirring of the liquid in the pot and looked at the phone without saying anything. With a soft, trembling voice, as if she might burst into tears, she said:
"It’s me, your Mami! Since I’ve been with you, have I ever offended you? Haven’t I given you everything? Everything I’ve had in my life is yours. There’s nothing about me you don’t know. I love you so much, baby, please forgive me, stop being angry with me, I swear my heart will burst..."
Then she broke down crying. He lifted his head, hating that he had made her cry. Slowly, he reached out, turned off the gas, washed his hands thoroughly, and returned to the phone, watching it, hearing her cries. He said bluntly:
"I hate crying."
Quickly, she responded:
"So you refuse to talk to me, so I’ll cry for you!"
Almost speechless, he replied:
"What am I doing now?"
She smiled faintly and said:
"You’re just a naughty boy, may Allah guide you. Because I said when I return, we should get married, and this is the reason for your anger."
He was silent, as if he wouldn’t speak, continuing to stir the liquid in a fancy pot. If it were anyone else, she would have scolded him, but she waited. Finally, he looked at the phone and said:
"I hate marriage because it’s nonsense, and you know that."
Quickly, Hajia said:
"I know better than anyone, but I want you to understand something. Don’t let what your parents did make you hate marriage completely. I love you, Maheer. I’ve loved you since you were very young. I raised you with love. Your love made me want to marry you. I know you will never want anyone else. That thought doesn’t hurt me because I know who you are, Maheer. I groomed you to become who you are today. I want you as my husband forever. I want to bear your child, even though I’m past menopause now. But we’ll see a doctor in Dubai—he knows what to do. Please, Maheer, help me. I don’t want to die without a child. I want to give birth to a boy or girl carrying your blood. This is my only wish."
With a short sigh, trying to hide his anger, he said:
"This will be the last time I will say this to you, Maryam!"
He called her name directly, making her face fall. Then he said:
"I will never marry! And I don’t want children! In fact, I hate babies. I hate children. If you want to discuss something else, you can call me, but for now, go get some air."
Without cutting her off, he heard her saying hello repeatedly. He removed his apron, walked past her, opened the door, and left. Nas, sitting nearby, asked:
"Where’s my phone?"
Maheer passed by without looking at him, unaware of Nas’s feelings. He went back to the kitchen, put the phone in his pocket, picked up the Liquid X he had prepared, and left to take it to the manager to let him know that clients had requested it.
