From the time Sakina was born, Ayyah (Ruqayya) never gave birth again. It was Gwaggo (Suwaiba) who continued having children: she gave birth to Mudanseer, Abubakar, Fa’iza, Sadiya, and then the youngest, Zainab.

After that, she too stopped giving birth. Their children all grew up very closely together. Unless someone told you, you could never tell whose children belonged to whom. Together, they raised their children with good morals and built their home upon a beautiful and admirable system, despite the many sudden outbreaks of jealousy they faced from time to time.

Then there was Hamza’s younger brother, Yusha’u. He too had one wife and two children. He also built his own section in the family house for his wife to live in, fencing it off just as Hamza had done. He married his wife, Dausiyya (Gaje), around the same time Hamza took his second wife. That was what made Gaje carry the jealousy of the world against Suwaiba, almost as if they shared the same husband, because everything about Suwaiba’s marriage seemed better than hers.

She tried to create confusion between Suwaiba and Ruqayya, hoping they would unite against Suwaiba and isolate her in the house, but Allah did not allow that to happen. There was no kind of hypocrisy or scheming she did not try against them, yet whenever disagreements came between them, they never lasted long before the two women understood each other again.

When Maryam’s care fully returned to Suwaiba’s hands, Gaje was deeply upset. She kept encouraging Ruqayya to take Maryam back, but Allah did not decree it so.

What further increased Gaje’s hatred was the fact that Suwaiba gave birth to a son — Ahmad. Around the same time, Gaje also gave birth, but like Ruqayya, she had a girl, who was named Binta.

Even then, Gaje tried to plant hatred for Ahmad in Ruqayya’s heart, but it did not happen, because Ahmad too eventually came completely under Ruqayya’s care.

Once Gaje realized that she could not succeed in ruining the relationship between Ruqayya and Suwaiba, she turned her jealousy against both of them entirely. Every day, her goal was how to trouble them or make them fight.

But the two of them ignored her completely, behaving as though they did not even know she lived in the house.

In that way, life continued until Ilyasu, the third son of Malam Rabi’u, also got married.

Ilyasu married a woman named Sailuba. From the moment Sailuba came into the house, Gaje began influencing her and planting hatred for Ruqayya (Ayyah) and the others in her heart. Little by little, it started affecting her too. The two women separated themselves from the others, and you could hardly ever hear or feel their presence in the household. Gradually, they even began to influence their husbands.

That was how the unity of Malam Rabi’u’s family nearly began to fall apart.

Malam Rabi’u became deeply worried when he realized where the problem was coming from. So he gathered all four of his children, including his youngest daughter Marwanatu, who was also married in Dutsinma.

He scolded them severely, not sparing any harsh words, over the wickedness of their wives who were destroying the family bond.

All of them became subdued, because they truly realized their mistake. They kept apologizing to their parents.

Then Iya Ladi said she would not forgive them unless Yusha’u and Ilyasu took additional wives, because she had understood that the problem was coming from their current wives.

Immediately, Ilyasu agreed that he would marry another wife. But Yusha’u pleaded for pardon, saying that he personally had no intention of marrying anyone after his wife Gaje.

Iya Ladi said that was not enough. Taking another wife had become compulsory for him. She gave him time to go and find one, and from that point the matter remained open for as long as three years.
