She quickly slipped into her neat school hijab, which did not even reach past her elbows. She looked at herself in the mirror, staring closely at her reflection. It was her beautiful face she was looking at, but slowly her eyes filled with tears. She shut her eyes, and that gave the tears the chance to roll down.

She hurriedly wiped them away, picked up her old handbag, and slung it over her shoulder.

She took the textbook in which she had done her assignment the day before, which she had left on top of the mirror, and quickly stepped out of the room.

As soon as she opened her bedroom door and came out, she found herself in the large sitting room of the house, a place anyone would describe as paradise on earth. It was a magnificent living room, so beautifully designed and furnished beyond imagination. One glance at it was enough to tell that its owners were extremely wealthy. The room was decorated with expensive, gorgeous royal cushions, and even their designs alone were something to admire. Spread across the middle of the room was a large, soft Turkish carpet so plush that your toes would sink into it as you stepped on it. To one side of the room was a beautifully arranged dining area, exquisitely designed and decorated all around. Every door and window in the sitting room was covered with heavy, elegant curtains, and beautiful flowers were placed in every corner, shining and drawing attention. Still within the room was a massive plasma TV, making noise all by itself. Apart from the TV talking, there was no one in the sitting room, only the cool air blowing from the air conditioner.

She looked toward the dining area and saw that the table was completely empty. There was not even a spoon on it, let alone a food flask. From all indications, no breakfast had been left for her in the house today either.

Weakly, she turned the handle of the sitting room door and stepped outside into the large compound of the house, which was also richly built. She headed straight toward the main gate, lowering her head and holding the schoolbag on her back with both hands.

The gatekeeper, Jahiru, who was standing by the gate, saw her and smiled kindly.

“Laylerh, little miss queen of lateness, so you are finally going to school this late today?”

She slightly closed her eyes and nodded, meaning, “Yes.”

He smiled again and said, “Alright then, go well. May Allah grant you success.”

In a soft, gentle voice, she replied, “Ameen, Malam Jahiru, thank you.”

She opened the small door built into the gate and stepped outside.
