Overall, almost no one in the house was resting. During the Fajr prayer, Abeey and Uncle Saleem went to the hospital together. Even at that time, there was still no news of Tahee. Uncle Saleem and Abeey were both deeply worried, seeing how troubled Abeey had become. Their concern for Tahee was intense. Meanwhile, King still showed no movement, his body and skin glowing with a strange light, as if he were not truly present.
It wasn’t until daybreak that the family began arriving at the hospital. This time, Ammey didn’t follow them because of how her heart felt, yet she didn’t show it at all. She even pretended to have a fever, despite Abeey insisting that she come to check on Tahee at the hospital. On Abeey’s side, he didn’t say anything; he just told Umma to rest at home. Ammey turned back but, seeing the situation, returned home with them. This time, Abeey was left in the room with King.
When Abeey saw King, tears welled up in his eyes uncontrollably. His heart raced. Memories of past events over the years began to resurface, especially when he looked at King’s condition. Seeing him struggling like that added to his own anxiety, and he began quietly reciting prayers in his heart, seeking God’s guidance.
Umma entered her part of the hospital and widened her eyes in surprise at seeing someone she didn’t expect: a young, beautiful woman who didn’t seem older than 35. She raised her head, her skin radiant and flawless. Truly a beautiful young woman, her calm presence seemed to fill every space she occupied. She resembled Umma in some ways, yet had her own unique grace and charm.
Umma smiled as the young woman approached, and before she could speak, the young woman—like a small girl—hugged her warmly. In a gentle voice, she said in Arabic, “Umma, I’ve missed you so much. I’ve been trying to call your phone, but I couldn’t reach you. Even that number I tried on the day of the fight seemed to be off—nothing worked.”
Tears threatened to fall, but Umma quickly stopped them. With a light smile, she looked at the young woman. “Samreen! When did you arrive? You didn’t even inform anyone.”
Samreen smiled, opening her arms. “Surprise! Only King knew I was coming because I promised I wouldn’t go through Ammey. Since you wouldn’t let me see his bride, I came to see her myself. This time, I plan to stay for a good two months before leaving this house.”
Umma nodded, cutting her off gently, “You should rest now. I also need to take care of things,” signaling that it was time for her to leave.
Samreen followed her with her eyes. She noticed Umma seemed troubled, especially compared to when she first entered. She sensed something missing but, knowing Umma’s temperament, didn’t follow her into the room and instead went to her own prepared room.
After sleeping, Samreen woke up and didn’t see Umma. Surprised, she went straight to Umma’s bedroom and raised her hand to knock, nearly startling Umma. She quickly pushed the door open. Umma wasn’t crying now, but Abeey and Umma both stood, their faces marked by tears.
Samreen, in tears, began speaking:
“Umma? Abeey? Why? Why would you hide my brother’s condition from me? Why? Umma, I don’t want to lose him the way I lost Akhieee.”
Her voice broke, and another fresh wave of crying escaped her. Umma’s tears flowed freely, and only Abeey could console them both into silence.
While Abeey was in the room, Mahma called on his phone. Even without being told, he knew she was in Lagos. Looking at the details she had given, a small smile appeared on his face before he turned to Umma.
“Sit down and rest. Until later, Samreen will come with you.”
Umma didn’t respond, and Samreen just shook her head.
“Samreen is at the hospital right now,” Abeey added.
After that, he didn’t look at them again and left the room. Umma finally exhaled, relieved that her son was at the hospital. Seeing him safe gave her peace. She decided to stay, knowing that while Mahma was present, no one could harm her daughter by God’s will. She didn’t show any emotion on her face, but Samreen, exhausted and overwhelmed from her arrival, remained seated on the floor until Umma personally comforted her.
