It was a house that could easily be called a family compound, because a large extended family lived there together. There were no fewer than eight sections or rooms. Older siblings, younger ones, and even close relatives who had ownership rights all lived within the compound.
At one of the sections, a crowd had gathered, watching what was happening. Of course, there was never a shortage of spectacle, talk, or even gossip in such a busy household.
What they were gathered to watch were boxes—boxes being carried out one after another in a line. The women who had come to remove the belongings were cursing loudly.
One of the women dragged a small box forcefully, as if she would tear off the handle. She said: “Alhamdulillah, Allah has saved our son from disgrace. What would we do with such useless baggage? Honestly, our son is far above this rubbish. A boy from a noble family—how can that be justified? A girl everyone knows has had countless affairs, and now they want to accept her bride price? Just because Zubairu has no choice, we should let him marry her? Wallahi, it will never happen! Not even at gunpoint! If I had been around instead of being in Saudi Arabia, would I have allowed this nonsense to go this far, even to the point of bringing the dowry?”
She paused, opening her mouth wide as she spoke, revealing even her back teeth, her face glowing with intensity.
“We have cancelled the marriage! We don’t bring disgrace into our lineage!” she concluded.
The woman walking beside her supported her, saying: “That’s true, Hajjaju. I knew once you came back, everything would be dismantled. It only happened because you weren’t around.”
Hajiya Dudu snapped: “Now that I’m back, let me see who dares to conduct this useless marriage!”
She hissed loudly as she pulled a trolley along.
A woman who had been crying uncontrollably since their arrival rushed forward and grabbed Hajiya Dudu’s hand. In a trembling voice, choked with tears, she pleaded: “Hajiya Dudu, please, for the sake of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), protect my dignity… Please don’t let this marriage be cancelled. Save my daughter, please…”
Before she could finish, Hajiya Dudu yanked her hand away, breathing heavily and casting her a harsh glare as she adjusted her veil.
“You, Suwaiba, listen carefully. Even if your daughter were the last woman on earth, Zubairu will not marry her! Who even knows why every suitor runs away from your daughter? And now you want to attach her to our son? There are plenty of girls in this town—young, beautiful, and untouched—not like your daughter who has grown old moving from house to house. In fact, we will find Zubairu a bride from within the family. Our home is not empty that we should go outside—especially to pick up trash like your daughter!”
With that, she forcefully pulled her hand away again and said: “Zinaru, let’s go before anything happens to these items. If even one thing gets damaged, it must be paid for! From here, we’re heading straight to Hajiya Atine’s house with these things. Our son will marry a relative, not some outsider!”
They left together, throwing insults as they went.
The woman they had called Suwaiba collapsed to the ground, crying bitterly. She held her head with both hands and said: “I am finished… Where will I find peace after this disaster?”
Another woman, slightly younger, who seemed more composed, spoke up sharply: “Oh my, Suwaiba, what a situation! If I’m not mistaken, this makes it about ten marriages where bride price was accepted and later returned!”
“It hasn’t reached ten…” Suwaiba replied weakly through her sobs.
The woman clicked her tongue. “If I speak, you’ll say I’m jealous. I advised you to take that girl for spiritual help, that water spirits may have married her—but you refused to listen. Instead, people even told you that I was the one who bewitched your daughter and stopped her from getting married! Well, even if I had done something, when it reaches a breaking point, you should go to scholars and seek a solution!”
She burst into laughter, clapping mockingly: “Let’s just watch and see… we’re all watching and listening!”
She adjusted her wrapper as she spoke.
Meanwhile, the rest of the household who had gathered to watch had already begun spreading gossip about the incident.
