Her head was spinning as she tried to study, but it was impossible. No matter how hard she tried to divert her mind from what was happening in the middle of their house—between her father and his daughter—the events kept breaking through her focus.

She let out a deep sigh and pressed her fingers against her ears, trying to block out the sound of her father beating Khadeeja while shouting,

“By God, I’ve never raised someone more stubborn! Are you saying you don’t respect me? Don’t you want your sister’s son?”

She, on the other hand, didn’t hold back; she screamed,

“I said I don’t love him, and I swear I will never marry him!”

But her father refused to stop beating her.

This was almost a daily occurrence in their home. Every day he would insist that she marry her cousin, and every day she resisted, refusing to marry him. Fatima herself was amazed at how stubborn Adija could be. Their father was a terrifying man, feared not only by his own children but even by the neighborhood kids. If he saw a boy doing something wrong, he would lash out violently, sometimes dragging him by the neck. That’s why everyone feared him so much.

Yet Adija, despite his harshness, refused to be cowed. No matter how much he beat her—sometimes dragging her across the floor—she stayed firm in her decision not to marry him. She already had someone she loved. He forbade her from going out or attending school, but none of it made her relent. Their mother never intervened; she stayed focused only on her own matters. When she walked past, she wouldn’t even glance at the scene.

Fatima let out a deep sigh, then got up and walked to her sister’s room. She pulled aside the curtain, and to her dismay, she saw their father hunched over, holding Adija down while she cried quietly, her voice muffled. On the other side, their mother sat squatting, busy with her evening prayers. Fatima’s tears welled up as she watched her sister suffer. After finishing her prayer, their mother quickly moved toward Adija, squatting beside her and lifting her up. Her sister’s eyes were swollen from crying so much over the constant abuse she endured.

A smile appeared on Fatima’s face, though her tears kept flowing as she said,

“Adija, you must help yourself. Accept father’s choice; one day you will see the benefit of obedience.”

Adija smiled faintly at her sister, her voice shaky,

“Fatima, you’re too young to understand what I’m going through. I don’t love him. I love Abdulhameed. He is the desire of my heart. He is the one I hope to spend my married life with, not that boy.”

Before she could say more, their mother called her, and she hurriedly got up and went to her, obeying her instructions.
