She stood inside the computer store, right in front of the counter, wearing a long maroon hijab that was tightly wrapped, covering her completely. She stared at the young man behind the counter—a tall youth sitting on a chair in front of the system, pressing buttons and working on the computer. From the way she watched him, it was clear she was trying to see what he was doing on the system.
She only moved her large, oily eyes, watching him intensely. Her jaw dropped slightly, afraid to let it fully open, knowing how difficult it had been for her father to gather the money to bring her there. She didn’t want anything to go wrong; even a small mistake could prevent her from entering, even for an FCE.
Lost in thought, she saw the young man rise from his chair and walk to the printer to collect the paper that had come out. Her jaw dropped further, and she widened her eyes like electric bulbs, unable to believe what she was seeing.
He picked up the paper, returned to the table, and placed her WAEC card in front of her. He smiled and said,
“Congratulations, Fatima Zarah! You passed WAEC with six credits. Six credits for you. I’m proud of you. May Allah bless your results.”
He handed her the paper. She took it quickly, looking at it closely. She had a C in Maths, English, and other important subjects required for a science student.
A charming, cool smile spread across her face, her dimples deepening, showing her white teeth. She didn’t do anything extreme—no falling to the ground—but she bowed slightly in gratitude. The young man laughed, turned back to his seat, and said jokingly,
“Wayaga, su ustaziya Faty!”
She stood up, smiling, placed her bag on her shoulder, and unzipped it to put the card inside. She zipped it back up, then looked at the store owner and said,
“Thank you, Yaya Habu.”
He turned to look at her, raised his eyes in a teasing manner, but she didn’t respond—she just turned and left the shop. As she walked, she couldn’t stop smiling, completely overjoyed, feeling like nothing else mattered.
She walked alone through the neighborhood, passing children playing in lines, shouting and laughing. She continued until she entered a fairly large house with a long corridor. The house was well-built, with five rooms; each room had a living area, two main living rooms, four servants’ quarters (two for bathing and two for general duties). There was a laundry area, a spacious kitchen where everyone came to cook their meals. The house was paved with cement, smooth and firm, as if it were made to be walked on without slipping.
