The eyes of the King of the town fell on him again, filled with both surprise and fear, lest Datijo act rashly. He opened his mouth and said:

“Are you serious, Doguwa? Really? Don’t bring Doguwa into the matter for the mistakes we’ve committed!”

The Lion of the town’s people closed his eyes in frustration, feeling the shock of the onlookers. Doguwa… to think that even the king’s mouth had named her openly in front of his people! That Doguwa was Aljana, the one whose oath they had sworn by! That Doguwa was the one they trusted and accepted, the one they relied on to intervene in their affairs. But what they did not know was that he had not come to their town unprepared. Today, he was ready to burn Doguwa’s corpse with his own hands, if he wanted, by the glory of God! That useless, shameless Doguwa?

For the first time since this confrontation began, he opened his mouth, directly speaking to the king alone. Those far away could not hear him, and even those nearby barely caught the words, as it was not their conversation to comment on.

He said in a calm but firm voice:

“Are you a Muslim? Descendant of Muslims? You stand over the commoners, trampling the rights of those who have been wronged! The one who assaulted his own wife, committing rape, adultery, even murder, all because she refused him and was killed…? Truly, if you do not act, I will pour petrol on the tree where your Doguwa sits and burn you all together, AMIRU!”

The king flinched, his eyes darting around, his heart racing. Subhanallah, he did not know how to respond. Was this really the Lion of the people speaking? God, where would this end today? He realized that the Lion demanded that justice be carried out according to the dictates of religion. In their land, executions were rare, because usually the punishment was limited to imprisonment until matters were forgotten, and then the guilty would be released to flee. But now, this had happened?

He shifted his attention to Ustaz AL’AMEEN. Lowering his voice so that only those close could hear, he said:

“Bismillah, Ustaz. What is the ruling for someone who kills a servant without cause? Does this ruling come from your time? I mean, in your era, when religious law is the standard in our community… Bismillah.”

Ustaz AL’AMEEN, the chief judge of the Sharia court in ZAKIN SARAKAI, leaned forward and began his explanation:

“In Sharia, killing without justification is a major sin. Without delay, our Lord, who created us, has outlined how we should live. Allah does not permit anyone to oppress their fellow human, which is why He Himself said that oppression is forbidden. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), to protect the lives of his community, forbade anyone from harming even a fellow Muslim. It is haram for a Muslim to frighten or harm another Muslim in any way, even in minor matters.

For demonstrating human rights, the authentic hadith says that when a person slaughter an animal, it must be done with care and compassion; the animal itself should not be tortured. So how much more serious is it for one to take a life? In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 178, Allah says: “O you who believe! Prescribed for you is legal retribution in cases of murder: the free for the free, the slave for the slave, and the female for the female…”

This means that if a person kills someone, the same ruling applies to them, whether free or servant. Today, since there is a shortage of servants, we must carry out justice across the entire community. Any society that remains silent after an unlawful killing invites corruption. Likewise, in Surah Al-Ma’ida, verse 32, when the sons of Adam killed one another, Allah said: “Whoever kills a soul unjustly, it is as if he has killed all of mankind…”

From this, we see that the ruling of capital punishment applies not only because of murder but also to prevent corruption on earth. It is not leniency or mercy that we show, but the law of Allah. In Surah An-Nisa, verse 93, it is said: “Whoever kills a believer intentionally, his abode is Hell, where he will remain forever, and Allah is angry with him, and has cursed him and prepared a great punishment for him.””
