Narma’s collapse in front of him drew everyone’s attention away from Omar. They rushed to her, shaking her, but Narma wasn’t even breathing. Panic seized them. They quickly carried her and rushed to the hospital. He was filled with deep regret and anger, feeling as if he wanted to grab Omar by the neck and slit it so everyone could have peace. Anyone who looked at his face could tell he was far from calm; they were all deeply disturbed by what had happened.

Late at night, Narma opened her eyes and looked at her parents sitting beside her. She also glanced at her siblings standing nearby. In a hoarse voice she said, “Dad, has Faruk left?” Her words made them realize she had woken up, and they all turned to look at her.

Sen clicked his tongue and said nothing before leaving the room, because if he stayed any longer he didn’t know what he might do to her. Mum moved closer, held her hand, and said, “Narma, stop talking about that. Let’s go home. You’re lying in the hospital right now.” Narma replied, “Mum, if I lose him, I will die.” Mum felt angry but didn’t show it. She said, “I told you to be quiet, didn’t I?” Narma fell silent, remembering everything that had happened, her head feeling very heavy.

Not long after, they decided to go home because none of them were at ease. Seeing that Narma was somewhat stable, they left the hospital and went home. No one spoke to her; each person went to their own room to rest. She too lay down, though not because she wanted to sleep.

Mum went to Sen and found him standing by the window, on the phone, saying, “Do whatever needs to be done. If it were up to me, I’d have him sent straight to prison. I don’t want any delay, I swear.”

From the other end of the phone came a voice: “Calm down, Sen. You can’t send someone straight to prison without any crime.” Furious, he replied, “Didn’t I tell you he choked me in my own house?”

“That alone isn’t enough to sentence him to life in prison. A court has to pass judgment.”

Sen said, “Look, I don’t want any long process. What should be done now?”

The man said, “Leave everything to me. I’ll frame him in a way he won’t be able to escape. Your name won’t come up at all. We’ll plant cocaine on him and release him. Once he’s out on the street, we’ll send the NDLEA to arrest him. After they catch him, I’ll know what to do to hand him over to court. From there, he’ll be sentenced as a cocaine trafficker. Your name won’t be mentioned in the matter.”

Dad clicked his tongue and said, “You hear me? Keep him locked up somewhere, and make sure he’s disciplined so thoroughly he won’t even be able to lift his hands. Beat him until he can’t tell whether he’s in this world or the next. Make sure he can’t even move his fingers. As for the other two, let them go. I want them to deliver the message that Tiger must never return to Kano again—ever!” After saying that, he ended the call and turned to look at Mum, who was staring at him.

“From the start I told you not to associate my daughter with a thug, but you refused to listen. You even thought he would work for you where the authorities wouldn’t. Now look at what you’ve brought upon us. This is a huge disgrace to the family. The daughter I gave birth to—a man like him comes all the way here to say he wants her, just because you gave him face and freedom until he started thinking he’s equal to us,” Mum said angrily, blaming him entirely.

Sen replied, “I made a mistake. I didn’t think it would go this far. But now I’ll fix everything.”

“Even if you fix it, it’s already been done. A boy came right into this house, arguing as if he were your equal. Then he looked at you and said he wants your daughter. Is there any greater insult than that?”

Sen remained silent, though only he knew the pain burning in his heart. Mum continued, “What are we going to do about Narma now? I’m sure he used some kind of charm on her. Since he managed to get into a car with her, he must have done something to make her this obsessed with him. Look at the state she’s in—heartbreak, whatever spell he used, and the slap you gave her earlier.”

Sen said, “I’ll send her to London to rest. Then the matter of Ashraf will return—he’s the one she originally loved. Whatever charm he used made her say she didn’t love Ashraf. But now it will be reversed. Once she rests and comes back, I’ll marry her off to Ashraf.”

Mum said, “He has truly harmed us. He has ruined her reputation completely. Saying he loves Narma—just imagine,” she added bitterly, looking at him.
