Mommah followed him with her eyes, but she said nothing. It was not because she had nothing to say, but because she knew saying it would be useless. Dad hissed, turned, and walked completely out of the living room. Mommy, who had been seated, stood up and came over to her. She touched her shoulder and, with a slight smile, said, “Khadijah, stop taking things so seriously like this. If he does not love Zayyad, then who will? Mommy was silent for a while, then she said, “Alright. Later, when Zayyad comes back, we will sit him down and talk to him, without Yallabai hearing, okay?”

He was sitting on the sofa pressing his phone, smiling faintly from time to time. She came out wearing an Ankara gown, holding an ice cream in her hand. She sat down and began eating it without even looking in his direction.
“Nimra.”
She looked up briefly at him before saying, “Yes.”
The careless way she answered, as though she did not care, made him even angrier. He set his phone aside, still looking into her eyes, and said, “So you do not know that I have been sitting here in this living room waiting for you?”
She shrugged slightly, licked the spoon in her hand, and said, “Of course I know. Did you not see that I came and sat down? I was going to keep you company, but I think you are busy doing something.”
She spoke with obvious disregard, and still she did not look at him. He stood up angrily, staring at her, and said, “What kind of woman are you? Do you even know what you are doing? Do you know the value of the marriage you are in? Did you even attend Islamiyya?”
She too stood up angrily, giving him a fierce look, and in a raised voice said,
“Stop raising your voice at me. Stop shouting at me, okay? I am not your child, and I am not your younger sister. I am not the kind of woman who will stand there while you say whatever you like to me. I am your wife. I got married, not signed up for suffering, so do not ever say that you will lecture me again, otherwise...”
