Ummi was walking while singing, running and jumping at the same time. Ummi’s pace was fast; she never walked slowly. From a distance, she spotted a girl who wouldn’t escape her luck today.
She said, “Ah, there’s Firdausi, the one who teased me.” She headed toward her, grabbed her by the chest, and held her tightly.
“Firdausi, are you teasing me?” Ummi asked.
Firdausi, trembling, said, “I didn’t tease you.”
Ummi shook her by the neck. I could hear Firdausi saying, “Ummi, leave me!”
Ummi pushed her away, saying, “May God guide you.”
The reaction from Firdausi was instant—she fell to the ground and cried, “You’ll pay for this! You’ll pay!”
Ummi ran home with speed, placing the peanut she had bought aside and rushed to the bathroom, feeling an urgent need to relieve herself. Umma, who was seated, shouted, “Goodness! Goodness!!” until Ummi opened the door.
Seeing her brother, Abba, she quickly turned and ran into Umma’s room, exhausted after getting through the thick mattress Umma had laid for frying food for lunch. Then she remembered that she wasn’t safe—Abba would surely track her down. She ran to the old woman’s room.
The old woman was performing Zuhr prayer. Ummi jumped over her to hide under the bed. She managed to drink the beverage that the old woman had prepared for her after prayer. Alhaji Babba had sent the drink from the market so she could enjoy it during the day.
Abba came out, feeling irritated. He headed toward Umma’s room, calling, “Ummi, Ummi, come here.”
He found Umma gathering the mattress that Ummi had scattered. He said, “Umma, I don’t even know what kind of punishment to give Ummi today.”
Umma replied, “Abba, give her a punishment as if she’s dead. I’m tired of Ummi’s behavior. This girl—you’d say she’s just a child? Look at her, she went to the old woman’s room because she knew she’d prevent her from being beaten.”
Abba said, “God forbid, the old woman just exaggerated it, but I won’t let her go.”
He turned to leave when they heard the old woman’s voice saying, “I won’t fight her. Kill her if you want, just hear me out, Malam. I don’t want her alive.”
She looked at Umma. “And you, Suwaiba, you know you wouldn’t honor my name, and you let her so you could enjoy upsetting me?”
Umma replied, “That’s not it, old woman. Ummi didn’t respect your behavior. She’s just reckless. She even went to check on her child and spilled my chili on me.”
Abba said, “Umma, please be quiet and leave this old woman alone. She ruined Ummi; anything this girl does, she prevents us from punishing her. Uhmm, all your fights today, I’ll deal with her, not your name, even if it’s you.”
The old woman cried and prayed. “Now, Malam, are you telling her this?” Abba replied, “It has been told to her.”
Umma said, “Abba, I’ll get you next time.” She turned to the old woman, saying, “Please forgive her…”
At that moment, Fiddausi’s mother arrived, and Fiddausi came with her. It was her mother’s day off. She stood holding some grain in her hand and looked at Umma.
She said, “Umma Abba, look at what your Ummi did to me. This girl almost ruined me; since this morning I’ve been trying to fix it, but she spilled it.”
Abba said, “See her behavior?”
The old woman said, “Isn’t this Bala’s wife?”
Fiddausi’s mother said, “It’s me.”
She said, “Go, go find whoever spilled your grain. Ummi hasn’t left the house.”
Umma said, “She went out to buy oil.”
The old woman said, “She was teasing her, that’s all.” Umma grabbed the grain and poured it for them, saying, “Please, Tine, be patient.”
Abba went toward his room. After getting ready, he grabbed his belt and headed straight into the house, entering the old woman’s room under the bed. He pulled her, and she screamed and shouted. He struck her once, but she resisted and held the belt, screaming.
The old woman arrived and hit him from behind, shouting, “Are you going to kill her? Someone help!”
In his anger, he grabbed her, poured kola on her, pressed her down, and hit her with his shoe because she resisted the belt. Only after that did he stop and leave them—both the old woman and Ummi were crying.
Once everything calmed, she went to fetch her beverage to drink but found it spilled. She said, “Why did you spill my drink?” Ummi said, “It wasn’t me, Abba.”
The old woman said, “He should have bought me a new one.”
She got up, passed Umma while she was distributing food, and went to the room where Abba was (the sitting room). He came out, closing the door. She said, “Aren’t you going out? Then buy me the drink you spilled.” He didn’t even look at her, just closed the door and walked away.
She said to him, “This is your work. If you don’t buy it, your father would come back and take it at night.”
Abba said, “You know.” She returned inside, muttering angrily. Umma asked, “Where is Abba?”
The old woman said, “He left. If he doesn’t buy her drink, he’ll be angry in this house today.”
Umma said, “He didn’t even eat before leaving. Ummi, come and call him; he’s hungry.”
The old woman said, “She won’t call him. You beat her and then call him? Since he didn’t let her eat happily, he also won’t eat.”
Umma got ready, frustrated by the anger she felt toward Ummi, as if it could kill her. Ummi took a bath, put on her clothes, and sandals. Umma said, “Where’s Ummi? Come here.”
Ummi went while muttering under her breath.
