As if from above, she suddenly heard a man’s voice behind her saying,
“Miss, is this yours?”
She quickly turned around and looked at him carefully.
The young man was quite good-looking, honestly. He looked about 33 years old.
He was very fair—his skin so light it looked almost as if blood would show through it. He had very attractive eyes, the whites as clear as milk, while the irises were light green. His mouth was small, and his lips were pink.
His hair was dark black and curly, though not very thick. Some strands fell slightly over his forehead, partly covering his eyes.
He wore an earring in his right ear, and there was a small black tattoo-like mark on his face. He was tall and well-built, clearly someone who exercised regularly.
He was dressed in blue crazy jeans and a white singlet, which exposed his strong muscular arms. On his feet were very stylish white sneakers.
Slowly, she lowered her gaze to what he was holding. When she saw her bag and her phone, she released a beautiful smile.
Quickly she reached out and took them from him.
“Yes, they’re mine. Thank you so much. I thought I had lost them forever.”
He placed his hands inside his pockets before saying,
“So, won’t you give me a reward for my effort? Even $100 would be enough.”
He finished speaking while scratching the back of his neck.
She looked him up and down before clicking her tongue lightly and turning away to continue walking, hanging her bag over her shoulder.
She was about to put her phone back into her bag when suddenly someone snatched it from her hand.
She quickly raised her head and said,
“Who is it?”
Then she saw that it was the same young man. He had taken her phone and ran ahead, turning into a small corner just ahead of them.
She quickly ran after him saying,
“Hey, mister! Give me my phone!”
Just as she turned the corner too, she suddenly stopped.
It wasn’t really a corner—it was one of those small trash corners foreigners make for placing trash bins.
She spotted him sitting on some cardboard boxes, holding her phone and turning it around in his hand. With his other hand he held a cigarette, blowing out smoke.
(Wait… he had enough time to light a cigarette just from turning that corner? 🤔)
Slowly she walked closer to him. She pulled her veil over her nose, because the place smelled terrible. There was the bad smell of the trash and also the cigarette he was smoking.
But he didn’t seem bothered at all—he was clearly used to the smell.
She stopped in front of him and stretched out her hand.
“Give me my phone please. Wallahi, I’m already late for work.”
Without even raising his head to look at her he said,
“I told you to give me my reward, but you refused. Do you know if I sell this phone it could be worth more than $100?”
She quickly replied,
“Yes, I know. Please forgive me, I don’t have money right now. But tomorrow I will bring it. Please give me my phone.”
Slowly he took another drag of his cigarette before removing it from his mouth and blowing the smoke toward her.
She quickly turned her face away and slightly closed her eyes.
“What’s your name?” he asked, putting the cigarette back in his mouth.
She clicked her tongue before saying,
“Please just give me my phone.”
“Who is Allah? I don’t know him. So if you want your phone, answer my questions.”
He said this while turning on her phone and looking at the screen. Her photo appeared on the screen—she was wearing a pink gown, sitting in a garden and smiling beautifully.
Quickly she answered,
“Esra Yahaya.”
Slowly he nodded his head.
“Okay. My name is Kim. Are you married?”
“No,” she replied shortly.
“Okay. I’ll give you your phone… but promise me you will bring me chocolate tomorrow. If you don’t come, I’ll find you at your house.”
He said this while handing the phone back to her.
His statement surprised her greatly, and before she realized it she said,
“What would you even do with chocolate when you smoke cigarettes? I thought you wanted money to buy cigarettes.”
Slowly he lowered his head and said,
“Getting money for cigarettes isn’t difficult for me. I just want the chocolate.”
She looked at him carefully before taking the phone from him and turning to leave.
As she began walking away, he slowly lifted his head and watched her walking calmly.
Just as she was about to leave the place, she heard his voice again behind her:
“Stop passing through this road. There are many gangsters around at this time. Can’t you see the road is empty?”
She gave him a small smile and said,
“Thank you. Tomorrow I’ll bring your chocolate.”
With that, she turned and left.
Even after she had gone, he didn’t take his eyes off her. It took him a while before he finally ran his hand through his messy hair, then slipped his hand into his pocket, pulled out his cigarette pack, took another stick, lit it, and continued with what he was doing.
