His heart broke with pain as he looked at her and said,

“Forgive me, Munɗo. In shaa Allah, one day everything will come to an end.”

Tears streamed down her face again as she asked,

“Baffa… when will that be?”

Her sorrow touched him deeply, and he did not know what to say to her. She also fell silent. All she wished for was for him to take her away from this village.

When he noticed that darkness was beginning to fall, he said,

“Munɗo, get up. Let’s go home.”

She nodded and stood up, knowing she had no strength to refuse him.

As soon as people saw them on the road, some ran quickly to inform Laddo. Within a short time, a group came rushing down the path—some carrying sticks, others matches—shouting,

“Today we will burn that cursed girl so everyone can finally have peace!”

Maccido stopped at the entrance of the village and sent a young boy to call their father.

Munɗo heard their shouts and cries, and fear gripped her again. She clung tightly to Maccido.

“Calm down, nothing will happen,” he said, trying to comfort her.

But she held him even tighter, her whole body trembling.

Laddo and his people had already piled up firewood.

In anger he shouted,

“Wallahi, Maccido! If I count to five and you haven’t dropped that girl, you will see what happens! Sahi has said that if I don’t take action for the daughter we lost, she will leave my house. Should I mourn my child or lose my wife as well? This disaster is better killed so everyone can be free!”

Someone stepped forward, placed paper beneath the wood, and struck a match.

The fire quickly burst into flames. It was the dry season, and the fire spread rapidly.

Even Maccido himself began to feel fear. He watched in horror as they prepared to kill his daughter as though she were nothing more than a chicken.

Laddo, burning with rage, advanced toward them and tried to snatch Munɗo.

Suddenly Maccido shouted with a thunderous voice—something even he did not know he was capable of because of his usual patience:

“Wallahi Laddo! If you don’t move away from that girl right now, you will see what it means to be burned like black beans! I am tired of the way you people torment Munɗo. On what grounds do you accuse her of witchcraft? By the will of Allah, today it will be you and me!”

Laddo replied furiously,

“Wallahi I will spill your daughter’s blood since I have lost mine! You think she will eat my child and remain alive?”

As he said this, he reached again toward Munɗo.

Munɗo could do nothing but cry.

Just then, the sound of someone clearing his throat made everyone turn.

It was their father—the man everyone feared and respected.

They called him Ardo, the leader of the settlement.

Everyone in the camp was related—children of brothers and cousins, all one blood. They had grown up there together and raised families of their own until the community became large.

Their grandfather had died five years earlier, and after his death Maccido’s father had been appointed Ardo, the leader of the settlement.

Everyone greeted him respectfully.

He looked at the young man who was feeding the fire and said firmly:

“Put that out. All of you—follow me.”

Grumbling among themselves, they obeyed him, muttering that no matter what happened, the blood of the “witch’s demon child” must still be shed.

They followed him to the front of his hut where he usually sat.

One by one, they knelt on the ground.

Munɗo stood to the side, pressed close to Maccido.

Her body was still trembling.
