BAKIN CIKI 1***1 The chieftaincy of Uban Dawaki is a great one in the town of Fandagori, within Niger state. It is a large town whose inhabitants have prospered in farming and herding. Alh. Awaisu Malami, the Uban Dawaki, lives in a magnificent house filled with his many descendants from his two younger brothers. He is the eldest and his sections are larger and more orderly than anyone else's, a modern building. He has one wife, Hajja Halima, and three sons in succession: Abdulkadeer, Abdulkareem, and Abdulrahman, and their younger sister, Sakina, his only daughter. Her name is the same as the Uban Dawaki's mother's, which is why they call her "Mama." She is a slender girl whom God has blessed with a figure that seems to be her own. Almost all the family members are handsome, of Fulani descent. But Mama is exceptionally beautiful; when you see her, your heart skips a beat because of her sheer beauty. That's why, even before she reached adolescence, young men were clamoring for her, everyone wanted her, especially within her household, meaning her relatives. It even became a point of contention among them. The Uban Dawaki himself gathered them and put an end to talk of romance with Mama, forbidding anyone from speaking to her about it again. He did this to ensure peace and harmony. God helped, and everyone put aside their anger and accepted it. Besides this, he felt Sakeena was too young to get involved in the complexities of love, especially as she was about to start her secondary education. He made efforts to secure her a place in the Federal Government Girls' College, Bakori. He was at ease with this decision, but this ruling displeased some of the women in the household. They felt that Mama's beauty was the reason their own children were being overlooked, and they harbored a deep desire to marry her off. Indeed, the Uban Dawaki had ambitions for his only daughter, but they differed from the desires of the women in the house. They wanted to marry her off to a wealthy man or a chief. His ambition was for his daughter to pursue higher education like his sons, who were currently: Abdulkadeer, a Major in the army; Abdulkareem, an accountant at the CBN; and Abdulrahman, doing his NYSC in Jalingo. He vowed that even if he were no longer alive, his brothers would fulfill this ambition for him. Time passed, and Mama entered SS2. Today, they had a break after the second term. Early in the morning, the Uban Dawaki sent his driver to pick her up. They didn't arrive in Fandagori until after Asr prayer. Everyone was overjoyed, especially the children, who rushed to carry her luggage to her room. She entered with a greeting. Her mother met her and hugged her. She went to the other sections to greet them. She only found Salisu and Danlami among the young men in the sections. She sat down, they chatted briefly about school, and then she went back to her room. As she entered, her mother said, "Your father is here; he has returned." She quickly went to find him in his living room. With a smile from ear to ear, she curtsied slightly and said, "May God help the respected one!" His smile widened: "May God spare my mother. I was told you went to the sections." She sat at his feet and said, "Yes, I went to greet them. How are you, Father?" "Very well," he replied. "How were your studies?" "Thank God, we are grateful." He asked, "Where is your report sheet? Bring it for me to see." She stood up, went and fetched all the papers. He reviewed them, saying, "Very good!" After she finished, he looked at her and said, "You've done very well, my mother. I'm proud of you, but you still have a slight problem in Biology. You need to put in more effort. Do you know why?" She shook her head. He said, "Come closer." She moved very close to him before he said, "My ambition is for you to become a doctor, my mother. In my life, I've always wished to see a female doctor. It truly fascinates me. That's why since the day God gave me you, I've been praying that God would let me live to fulfill my ambition. Don't you wish to become one too?" She said, "I really want to be a doctor, Father. And Insha Allah, I will work harder to finish Biology." He patted her head with great joy and said, "Well done, my mother. May God bless you." She said, "Amen, Father." From there, they continued their conversation until a greeting was announced. He stood up and went to the main hall where his council met. Mama returned to her mother in the kitchen, where they were preparing food. She told her about what her father had said. Umma said, "Indeed, may God fulfill his ambition." She said, "Insha Allah, Umma, I will become a doctor." She asked, "May God grant it. Who showed Mama those colorful clothes?" Mama, laughing, said, "I just hung them up. They are what they wear when they are called Dr. Sakina." They burst into laughter. The next day, around 10 am, Mama dressed up in a green *atampa* and then wore an *after dress* and her scarf. She found Umma in the room. "Where are you going?" "I'm going to greet Inna Saude." "No, you mean you're going to see Baraka." She smiled slightly. "Umma, it's the same thing. When I greet Inna, we'll chat with my friend Baraka..." "Uhummmn... So, you want to become a lawyer instead of a doctor?" She laughed. "You want to put me at odds with Father." "Indeed. Well, tell Inna Saude that when she finishes my clothes, you'll bring them to me." "Okay, but I hope there's something for me in there." Umma said, "There's nothing for you in there, it's all mine. Mama pouted. "Well, Umma, I'll choose one of them." She said, "They're all beautiful, with long sleeves. I want them styled like that. No, I don't agree. Take my clothes back if she finishes them." She nodded. "Okay, Umma, I'm leaving. Come back safely, don't be long..." She packed her bag and said, "Okay, Umma..." Salisu was sitting at the gate. As she came out, he looked her up and down and then asked, "Where are you going?" "I'm going to Inna Saude's house." "Okay, I..."
