Slowly, I began to open my eyes, which felt heavy. As my vision cleared, I bumped into the bright POP ceiling of the room. I carefully turned my head left and right, but I couldn’t understand where I was. It felt like a small room, but then my eyes adjusted, and I slowly began to realize where I had found myself.

With great effort, I managed to sit up. I scanned the room with my eyes, trying to make sense of it. If this wasn’t a dream, then I was definitely in a hospital, lying on a hospital bed. When I looked at my right hand, I saw it wrapped with some fluid, and when I lifted my eyes, I saw more fluid being added. Dis! Dis! I frowned at the dripping fluid as it ran over my body. Following my gaze downward, I realized the clothes on me weren’t the ones I had left at home. I was wearing a long dress, which, if I wasn’t mistaken, belonged to Amina.

“What has happened to me?”

I said aloud because I couldn’t remember anything. I couldn’t recall the moment I found myself on the hospital bed. The room was empty, just me, like one of the VIP rooms. I pressed my head with my left hand, feeling dizzy, trying to remember the last moment before I lost consciousness. I did recall at Amina’s house being in her toilet, vomiting, and then I saw blood. Yes, I clearly saw blood. From that moment, my panic escalated, and I lost track of myself until now, when I found myself on a hospital bed.

“Innalillahi.”

I said. Just then, when I touched the lower part of my body, I felt warmth. It was true—I had started bleeding. But why? The bleeding was caused by worry and panic, a period that came earlier than expected. That’s what I told myself in my heart. I tried to make sense of the time, but I couldn’t. The room had electricity, and the window was far from me, yet I could sense some light from outside. Everything that had happened to me couldn’t have been long ago; it was still daylight, not yet night.

I adjusted my seating and tried to calm myself when the door opened, and someone entered. I followed the person with my eyes—it was a nurse, dressed in white, accompanied by a plump young woman.

“Hello, how are you feeling?”

She asked as she approached the bed where I was sitting.

“I’m fine… a little weak,” I replied softly. She then reached for a file on a small table beside my bed and opened it to check its contents.

“Please, who brought me here?” I asked. She looked at me before continuing to check the file, ignoring my question at first.

“Dr. Ibrahim Aliyu.”

I looked at her but couldn’t speak, because I didn’t remember knowing anyone by that name.

“Yesterday, you were brought here with another woman.”

“Yesterday?”
