There was no one in the hall because it was the first hall that connected to the royal hall and then to the king’s private chamber.
She stopped again and released another deep sigh for the third time. Her heart was pounding. Without turning toward the messenger, she said in a broken voice:
“This message from the Sultan (the King) deeply shakes my heart because it is a message that brings sorrow to him.
Any servant or courtier who delivers this message risks their life, which is why I chose to come and deliver it myself.”
The messenger released a heavy sigh and looked at Queen Zaarah with pity. Deep in her heart, she said aloud:
“May Allah help you, my Sultan, and ease your heart. Not because you have suffered a loss, but may He give you the strength to deliver the message of the King of Kings.”
Sultana Zaarah interrupted her and said:
“Childbirth has now become something we fear instead of something that brings joy.”
“My lady, may Allah ease your fears. But again, you must show the prince your happiness for the new blessing he has received, since he desires it that way and he thanks Allah for the increase He has granted him.
May Allah preserve the child that has been born and make her a source of pride in the future.”
The Sultana sighed again and softly said “Amin.”
Then she gathered her courage and composure and adjusted the scarf covering her long hair that flowed down her back. Some strands of the hair were decorated on her forehead with a beautiful golden chain. The scarf of her long dark-purple gown, decorated with dazzling stones that sparkled beautifully, trailed slightly along the floor.
She walked across the long hall with the messenger behind her toward the door that led to the king’s private chamber. When she arrived, the guard opened the door slowly for her. She entered while the messenger stood aside, waiting for her mistress to come out.
It was a luxurious hall. No one was inside except for the gentle hum of the air conditioner.
He was sitting there in royal attire.
He was an elderly man, carrying the dignity and authority of royal blood and kingship in his presence.
He looked at her once with his intense and intimidating eyes. She almost lost her composure but quickly steadied herself, gathering calmness and courage.
She approached slowly with fear and humility. Looking at him, she closed her eyes as they began to change with emotion, and with a trembling voice she said:
“May Allah help you… a message from GEORGIA…”
When he cast his sharp gaze at her again, she almost panicked. She quickly composed herself, lowered her eyes from his, and said in a trembling voice:
“The prince has sent word that his wife has delivered… a baby GIRL.”
She turned her face away to avoid seeing his reaction because from the way he suddenly became tense, she already knew the king was displeased. There was no joy or sign of happiness at hearing her message.
For twenty minutes, there was silence.
Then suddenly she heard his firm voice, filled with royal authority:
“You have delivered the prince’s message. Inform him that his message has been received.
As for your reward for bringing the message — you will not see him again until after one year.
Do not return until his wife becomes pregnant again. This time she must give birth here.
She must give birth to the prince whom his father refuses to acknowledge.”
After saying this, he stood up and walked toward his private chamber.
She lifted her head and looked at him. Her eyes were filled with pity for herself because she would not see her son again for another year.
It had been a long time since he married. His wife had first given birth to a girl and they returned to Georgia, but the king ordered them not to come back until she became pregnant again. When she gave birth again, it was another girl, so he drove them away again. That child later died, yet the king still refused to allow them to return until she gave birth to a boy.
Now she had given birth again… and it was another girl.
And now it would be another year.
It had been almost five years since she last saw her son, and she missed him terribly and longed deeply to see him.
