The girls grew up with an intense love and affection for each other, even stronger than the bond their own parents had while growing up.
There was nothing Sanah loved in her life more than Khulud, and Khulud too knew nothing greater than Sanah. They loved each other more than anything and anyone in the world.
Since they were very little, the differences in their personalities and behaviors had already become clear.
Sanah had a fiery temper. She was stubborn, mischievous, argumentative, playful, and always teasing people.
Khulud, on the other hand, was very quiet. She hardly liked noise or arguments. Talking too much wasn’t really her thing either—completely different from Sanah who talked endlessly.
If you ever heard Khulud talking a lot, then Sanah must be involved, because it was truly rare. Unless Sanah was around, even at home people could talk to Khulud repeatedly and she might not respond.
Khulud was not even the type of child who caused trouble, but Sanah was the complete opposite—full of mischief and stubbornness, and she rarely listened to instructions.
They attended the same school, the same class, and even sat at the same desk.
In the whole world, there was no one who dared touch Khulud in front of Sanah—even if it were their own parents. At school too, their teachers hardly dared to touch her. If anyone mistakenly touched Khulud, that day there would definitely be trouble.
And even though Khulud disliked arguments and noise, if anyone dared to touch Sanah, she would immediately explode and unleash chaos without thinking twice.
Everything they owned was exactly the same—right down to their pants and ribbons. They did not even allow their colors to be different.
If Khulud did something wrong, Sanah would quickly claim responsibility for it. They would argue endlessly, each insisting that she was the one who did it, until the person they wronged eventually became tired and gave up.
One day Sanah and Khulud were playing in the middle of their compound.
Sanah looked at Khulud and said,
“Ulud…” (that was how she called her, since she rarely used her full name).
“When we grow up and finish secondary school, what will you study?”
Khulud laughed and said,
“Well, I’m not interested in higher education. Once I finish secondary school, that’s the end of my studies forever.”
Sanah looked at her and said,
“As for me, I won’t stop until I reach the end of pen and paper. I want to study very far.”
Khulud replied, pouting her lips,
“You always like having different opinions from mine.”
Nearby, Hamraz and Rawan were standing and listening to their conversation.
Hamraz said,
“It seems my daughter Khulud will inherit it.”
Rawan looked at him and asked,
“Inherit what?”
Hamraz laughed and said,
“The inheritance of early marriage of course.”
Rawan laughed too and replied,
“But my daughter will pursue education.”
Hamraz responded,
“No, don’t say that. We might still change your mind.”
Rawan replied,
“No, that won’t happen. You know you always follow our decisions.”
Sanah laughed and said,
“Alright, don’t cry my Ulud, I’ll stop.”
Khulud quickly looked at her and asked,
“Really?”
“Yes, truly,” Sanah replied.
“Now that makes me happy,” Khulud said.
Sanah stood up and said,
“Ulud, I’m hungry.”
Khulud laughed and replied,
“Then let’s go eat. I’ll walk you to the kitchen.”
“No, let me walk you home first before I go.”
“No, I’ll walk you first.”
“Alright, let’s go,” Khulud said.
Sanah walked her all the way to the door of Khulud’s family section of the house.
Then Sanah said,
“Okay, now let me walk you back.”
So they returned again to Khulud’s section.
Khulud then said,
“Let me walk you now.”
And so they kept going back and forth escorting each other endlessly.
Their parents watched them and laughed.
Rawan said,
“Childhood madness.”
That day, Sanah and Khulud finished writing their primary school leaving examination (Common Entrance Exam).
They returned home happily.
The driver parked the car and they jumped out quickly, running toward where their parents were sitting.
They rushed into their arms.
Sanah said,
“Abbu, we finished our exam today!”
He smiled and stroked their heads.
“Masha Allah. May Allah grant you success.”
Hamraz asked,
“I hope you both tried your best?”
Khulud replied,
“We really worked hard, Dide.”
Then Rawan asked,
“So now, which school do you want to go to?”
