*BISMILLAH, I begin in the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. Alhamdulillah, I thank Allah, my Creator, who gave me life, health, and peace of mind, and who opened my understanding and enlightened my thought so that I have been able to begin this new book of mine called NAKASA BA KASAWA BACE. O Allah, I ask You to protect my pen from writing evil and from anything that will become poison or fitnah for Your servants. O Lord of Might, purify my thoughts and restrain my hand from writing anything that will bring regret upon me in all its smallness. O Allah, grant me life and health to complete this book in peace, together with me and those reading it.*

His disability was not a flaw to him, because the Hausa say: there is no disabled person except the one who is broken!

He possessed a brilliance that even a healthy person without a disability did not have. His life was a mirror for all people with disabilities; he was something astonishing to all healthy people, and something beloved and desirable to every believing servant in his heart. As his name was, so was his outward appearance and his inner self: *SAIFUDDEEN* Muhammad Ahmadu was a righteous, scholarly man, full of artistry and reliance on Allah, handsome in a pure and majestic way.

The root of Saifuddeen’s lineage and origin

They were Fulanis of DUKKU in Gombe State.

*DUKKU* is a town in Gombe, a place known for its Fulani people of extraordinary beauty, especially Fulani people who struggle in the pursuit of knowledge in both branches, that is, Arabic education and Western education.

The people of Dukku were renowned for excellence in this aspect, which is why they were everywhere among people of worth, dignity, and complete refinement.

*DUKKU diyam sad'i na kosam*

Malam Ahmadu was Saifuddeen’s grandfather.

Malam Ahmadu was originally a Fulani man from Dukku, from both line and blood.

That was his root, from parents and grandparents.

A great scholar like none other in Dukku at that time.

Most of the children of the town studied under him, because he had a large mosque, but he did not gather almajirai; whoever came would study, and when they finished, everyone would go home.

That was why children from distant neighborhoods also came to study there, such as the children of Sirinkiyo, Katafila, Fada, and Dugge here; even some from Shabewa came to the school. This made him famous throughout Dukku, because the Dukku emirate itself respected him, as he was the imam of the palace mosque.

Allah blessed him with properties, farmlands within Dukku town, and many farms, most of which he inherited from his father, the one who cleared the forests and hills around Dukku and its surroundings, because in those days farmland was not bought; you had to go into the bush, clear a piece of land, and prepare it, and then it became yours. The hardship made it yours, and it belonged to you.

Malam Ahmadu had one wife, named Bintu, and Allah blessed them with three children.

Their eldest child was named Muhammad Bella, who was the father of Saifuddeen. Then came Aliyu, and their youngest was Aisha, whom they called Dada.

They grew up in harmony and with compassion for one another, with no contempt at all, only respect and kindness.

He married off his sons.

Bello, Saifuddeen’s father, was a man of honor and completeness; he was calm, which was why he was married to his uncle’s daughter, named Fatima, though she was called Bisije. Saifuddeen and his brothers called her Ummi.

Ummi, whose mother was the younger sister of Malam Ahmadu, was an orphan, because in one night she lost her parents in a fire that consumed them. At that time she had been taken to be weaned in her grandparents’ house, and that was how she survived. Not long after, their grandparents died, so her care returned to Malam Ahmadu’s house, her uncle’s house.

Bello lived with the problem of epilepsy.

From time to time it would come upon him and trouble him greatly, which was why his parents chose to marry him to Bisije Ummi, since she was his sister and would patiently stay with him.

After everything needed for the wedding festivities was completed, then the marriage of Bisije and Bello took place.

The wedding was held in peace, and the guests dispersed in peace.

The day the guests left, Bello’s friends were preparing to take him home to the house he had built in their original family house.

But when they arrived, they found that he had dug a deep pit, then stacked thorn branches and trees and lit a fire.

He said he was going to jump into it.

At once his friends, Ashiru and Hamisu, ran to him and caught him, but he kept struggling, saying they should let him go because he wanted to fall into the fire, telling them that there was paradise beneath the fire and they should let him fall in.

This matter unsettled the relatives and respectable friends that night, and Hamisu and Ashiru had to sleep in his house, because if they had left him, he would have killed himself, since his epilepsy had flared up. His younger brother Aliyu and Dada, meanwhile, were busy calming the bride, who kept crying.

That was the beginning of Ummi’s sorrow, from the day her wedding dispersed, because she entered into the hardships of life. From that day on, every five months Bello’s illness would rise again; sometimes it would come on him three times in a year. But Alhamdulillah, it did not make him beat her or fight with her. Instead, he would wake in the middle of the night and walk around the town of Dukku.

Then wherever he found a mosque, he would stop and pray two rak‘ahs.

After that, he would continue walking while reciting the Qur’an loudly.

Before dawn, his voice would become hoarse, and his feet would swell.

His father, Malam Ahmadu, and all his relatives kept seeking a remedy for him, but Allah did not make it successful.

Thus the years went on as Ummi continued to endure her brother-husband, and even when her uncle tried to separate the marriage, she would cry and say she herself should be left with him. In her opinion, if even his sister abandoned him, who would stay with him? Malam Ahmadu had no choice but to leave them, while continuing to pray for his son to regain health.

For many years,
