Sarki Abdallah Adali is a king, a dignified man who loves his subjects. He has three wives and two children. His first wife, the head of the household, is Hauwa, called *UMMAH*.
His second wife is Saratu, *MAMAH*; and the third, the king’s bride, is Fatima, but she is called *FATU*.
UMMAH is a very jealous woman. She has arrogance and authority; she is a daughter of the royal house, and she uses her power in the king’s house because King Abdallah cherishes her. That is why she carries herself with pride in the house, and everyone fears her—from the palace servants, the male slaves, and the women slaves in the house, to everyone who lives there, including her co-wives. She has one child, Prince Anwar, who was spoiled and pampered. Outside, he did his schooling from secondary school up to college, but living there did him no small damage in terms of discipline, for as soon as he finished school he refused to return. He found a place where there was no restraint and no frowning.
It was only after the report of what he was doing reached the ears of the highness that an urgent message was sent and he was brought back.
He was severely reprimanded, and the king warned him that if he did not stop, he would marry him off within the family, search for someone, and arrange a wedding for him, whoever it might be.
Anwar’s work there had been going after loose women. Those foreigners had spoiled him like that; he mingled with bad friends who had no work whatsoever except going from one club to another, lounging around with women, drinking alcohol, and dancing.
But he was more attached to one white woman who insisted on being called RIHANNA. No matter how he humiliated her, she would swallow it. The one thing that made him keep drinking from her cup was that she knew how to care for a man’s heart; she was skilled in all the tricks of deception and romance.
That was where she outshone everyone. She was insanely jealous too, and she had fought with all the women who tried to come close to him. Yet still he kept leaving her and going to whoever he wanted, because she feared him and would not let him do that again.
Anwar had pride and compassion; he regarded himself as some kind of king. In his heart every day he felt that whatever he did, no one was able to stop him, since he was a king’s son and heir to the throne.
His mother kept planting more pride in his heart. Every day she reminded him that he was tomorrow’s king, though he did not really want to become king, because he knew that if he became king he would have to sit in one place and leave all the things he was doing.
Every day King Abdallah was troubled in his heart by what his son Anwar was doing, and he did not know what to do with him, because he cherished him, since he was his eldest son and would one day be king in the town.
He knew that his mother was the one encouraging him, because when he forbade him from living in Europe, she said he should be left to enjoy himself there. For some time, she did not want anything that would upset him.
The king’s other wives were each looking out for their own interests, because the middle one, MAMAH, had never given birth, while the king’s bride, FATU, had given birth to a son just five years after Anwar. The boy’s name was LAMIDO.
Ummah did not love FATU or her son, because Fatu had not stayed long after coming into the house before she became pregnant.
Even MAMAH, who came before her, did not harbor any grudge against Fatu, because MAMAH was a patient woman; the world did not trouble her.
She treated each of the children as though she herself had given birth to them.
But as they grew up, she came to love Lamido more, because he was a sensible boy; even talking did not bother him. He did his studies in Nigeria.
When he reached the age for university, the king wanted to send him to Europe too, but FATU refused to agree, because in her view sending a child to Europe without a mother and father ruins the child and changes his good character into a bad one, since even Anwar, after going there, had not been the same as before; later he had learned some habits.
The king was not offended by that, because she presented strong reasons for her dislike of his going to Europe, and he was satisfied.
MAMAH also saw no fault in it, because she knew everything and the two of them were united in their hearts.
UMMAH used to say they had ganged up against her.
And because they feared her, they did not interfere in her affairs.
Since Anwar returned to Nigeria about five months ago, he had grown tired of being confined. He was unable to go out to clubs, let alone chase women, because there was no chance; wherever he went, they were watching him. If he went out anywhere in town, the king might hear of it and it would be said that he had disgraced the house, so he preferred to stay outside.
Rihanna kept disturbing him, telling him that if he did not come back to Europe, she would pack her things and follow him to wherever he was.
His heart was unsettled because he knew she could do it, and he also knew that if she came, his situation in the house would be completely ruined.
Without delay, he began packing the things he would travel with, because he had promised her he would come within the week; in fact, he intended to go for only two days and return to her.
With thoughts of how he would win over the king before leaving, he went into the house, into his mother’s side, so he could first tell her about it and find a solution.
As he walked through the palace courtyard with great dignity and majesty, in royal attire, the female slaves hurried about their duties and passed him while bowing, offering greetings to the prince, the king of tomorrow.
One *SLAVE GIRL* was sweeping there by the place where the horses were kept. Her head was uncovered, and the scarf she had wrapped over her head had slipped off without her noticing.
She was fair-skinned, beautiful, with hips and a body that filled out her chest.
She lifted her head, about to leave the place, when he shouted at her.
She quickly came to him and knelt in obedience, greeting him.
He looked at her again for a few seconds, then said with elegance, “What are you doing there?”
With a trembling voice, she said, “I... I am... I’m sweeping...”
He said, “So are you the one assigned to sweep the horses’ area, or what, maid?”
Lowering her head, she said in a softer voice, “Allah help you, Prince, I beg your pardon, it is not my job. I am helping MAHBUB. He went away for something.”
He said, “MAHBUB? And who is *MAHBUB*?”
She began to stammer, thinking perhaps she had done something wrong.
She said, “He is my friend. He came with me. He is also helping me with the work, so that is why I am helping him.”
As she spoke, she caught his attention; her mouth was like a carved heart. He stared at her and saw that she was moving slowly.
When she fell silent, he also fell silent, just looking at her.
Something began to occur to him in his heart.
When she noticed that he was silent, she lifted her head.
