He kept silent, pressing his lips together; his face darkened and grew tense — this is what they call a bad mood. She staggered and held onto the wall. May Allah help her. Leaning against the wall in sadness, she said:
“Allah is sufficient for me against you, you useless man…”
He became angry at himself — what would he do with this dirty village girl? He looked at the palm of his hand, preparing to check the infection that had affected him.
When she noticed he was no longer chasing her, she slowed down her running, almost teasing him. From a distance, she saw that the students were already being lined up and even the school gate had been closed.
She placed her hands on her waist and stared at them before moving forward and shaking the gate quickly. The security guard, Idi, got up and said:
“You mother of latecomers, go back home! The headmaster said no one should be allowed in. As you can see, even those ones have already been assigned punishment — it’s almost ten o’clock…”
She stared at him until he finished talking, without responding. Suddenly, she took out the powdered pepper she had kept to eat with her food and blew it at him. By Allah’s mercy, it didn’t enter his eyes, only his nose.
He grabbed his nose and sneezed violently, shouting, “Oh no! My nose is gone!” Immediately, Malam Umaru and others rushed toward him. Meanwhile, DIJE had already slipped into the school compound, as everyone’s attention turned to the security guard, Idi.
Since no one knew what had happened to him, they all gathered around him. The headmaster himself came out, his shirt stretched over his huge belly — as if he were nine months pregnant — holding a large cane that dragged on the ground as he walked. In surprise, he asked:
“Malam Umaru, what happened?”
In distress, Malam Umaru replied:
“Wallahi, we only heard him shouting; we don’t know what’s happening.”
Malam Musa then came closer sympathetically and said:
“Idi, sorry… who did this to you? Mamman’s granddaughter?”
Confused, the headmaster asked:
“Mamman’s granddaughter? Which one is that?”
Cracking a groundnut and chewing it, he said:
“Khadijah Sule Mamman… DIJE Yasin. I just saw her pass by running.”
Quickly, Idi said:
“Wallahi, it was her!”
The headmaster said:
“By Allah, today she will be seriously punished — we’ll even pour hot water on her body! Idi, be patient. From today she will stop this nonsense. Come, follow me.”
They followed him, searching classroom after classroom, but she wasn’t found in her class. Malam Musa said:
“Let’s go to Primary Four. Her friend Rabi Shehu is there. Wherever she is, she will help us find her.”
They agreed and entered the classroom. Everyone was settled when they saw the headmaster. Rabi Shehu was writing when Malam Musa said:
“You, Rabi, tell us the truth. Where is DIJE?”
She quickly raised her head and said:
“Wallahi, we didn’t see each other today. Please, Shatu, did DIJE enter this class?”
Shatu blinked nervously — Allah had filled her with fear of being beaten. Hesitantly she said:
“Wallahi, she didn’t come in.”
Malam Musa frowned and said:
“Come out. I can see you’re not telling the truth.”
Trembling, they came out. The headmaster said:
“Malam Musa, I’m going back to my office. This walking has tired me. If you find her, tell me — she will be punished seriously. Malam Umaru, return to your duty.”
They agreed. After searching around the school, they stopped under a tree. Malam Musa said:
“Wallahi, whoever doesn’t tell me where DIJE is — and I find out you know where she’s hiding — I will deal with you seriously!”
They widened their eyes in fear. Shatu then looked up and locked eyes with DIJE, who was up in the tree eating a mango, her hijab tied firmly around her waist. As soon as their eyes met, DIJE shot her a warning glare. Shatu quickly lowered her head; she knew very well that if she revealed DIJE’s hiding place, she would be in serious trouble.
Suddenly, Malam Musa thundered at them:
“Go inside! Let’s move!”
They followed him to the office. He made them sit, ordered them to raise their hands and close their eyes, while he continued marking papers.
Malam Dan Ladi entered and asked:
“Have they still not said where she is hiding?”
He replied:
“Yes, wallahi, they haven’t.”
Malam Dan Ladi snorted and said:
“Then today, after school, they will clean this whole school. I’ll make sure you scrub it properly!”
Tears rolled down Shatu’s eyes — she was more afraid than Rabi.
At 1:30, school closed. DIJE took advantage of the crowd of students and slipped away unnoticed.
Inside the school compound, only Idi the guard, Malam Musa, Malam Dan Ladi, and the girls remained. Malam Musa said:
“You’re still keeping quiet? You haven’t told me where DIJE is, even though you know better than anyone where she hides…”
