An elderly man who had been moving in and out of a room into the courtyard said:
“Ya Salam! Please, for God’s sake, this crying will not bring Malam Abubakar back to this world. As Muslims, this wailing and shouting does not suit you. What Malam needs from you, as his family, is prayer. Our crying will not bring him back, but our patience and calmness will allow us to ask the Lord of the Throne to forgive him.
Please, let us be patient. May Allah forgive him and grant us patience over his loss.”
From the moment the old man began speaking, the house fell silent. His advice had a strong effect, and everyone became quiet—except for the soft sobs and sighs of some people.
Within about two hours, the body of the late Malam Abubakar was prepared. He was a righteous scholar, knowledgeable in religious teachings, devoted to Islam and Muslims, a speaker of truth no matter how bitter, patient and modest, and someone who made excuses for others in life and human behavior.
May Allah forgive him. Today is indeed a great loss. Allah took Malam Abubakar after a short illness of only 18 days, which became the cause of his death. He left this world after the dawn prayer, just three minutes after completing the prayer that Allah gave him the strength to perform—his final act of worship on earth.
He died on his prayer mat. He did not even move; his soul was taken while his son and sister, who were in the room, saw him collapse gently to the ground.
So we say: may Allah forgive him and all Muslim relatives who have gone before us to the home of truth.
O orphans, we feel for you, truly. May Allah increase our patience.
After the body was prepared, his two wives, Barirah and Fadima, were called to bid him farewell. They prayed for him and asked for his forgiveness, then left the room in tears.
Next, his children were called—there were nine of them. Barirah, the senior wife, had six children, while the younger wife, Fadima, had three. They also prayed for their father and wished him well, and they all left crying.
About 17 minutes later, the body of Malam Abubakar was taken to his final home (the grave). The sound of crying rose loudly as he was carried out before their eyes, and they had no power to stop it.
This is death—
the one that turns wives into widows,
the one that makes a child an orphan,
the one that cuts off the pleasures of this world,
the one that severs friendship and kinship.
O servant of God, do good deeds out of fear of this day. Today my father dies; tomorrow my friend; the next day my wife; then my child. Truly, one day it will be you who goes.
The funeral prayer for Malam Abubakar was held at the entrance of his house, after which a large crowd escorted him to his resting place.
By now, the house was filled with people offering condolences to those affected. It is said that when you go to a house of mourning, you will see the one who has suffered the loss—and that was true. By around 2 p.m., some people had already started chatting again and even eating food. But his children were not like that; one look at them showed they were still deeply distressed.
That is how it was.
7 days ago
Today was the seventh-day prayer for Malam Abubakar. After everything had settled, his close relatives gathered for a family meeting.
No one felt at ease until around 1:43 p.m., when most people had dispersed—relatives from near and far had gone, leaving only close family members such as his brothers and elder siblings.
Elder Malam Bilyamin began by greeting them and offering a long prayer for the deceased Malam Abubakar and for all Muslims who had passed on before us.
He then spoke at length about inheritance and about settling any debts the deceased might have owed. He advised and reminded them of the importance of maintaining family ties and continuing prayers for their father, and how they should manage their orphanhood in a way that would benefit them.
Softening his voice, he looked at them one by one and said:
“Please be patient with what I am about to say—especially you, the mothers. I know every mother wants to live together with her children, but destiny has separated them, not by choice. And as I see it, today it will also separate you from yours. That is the greatest favor we can do for you, and it is how we will show our love to our brother. After the earth has closed over his eyes, we must take care of the children he left behind.”
