He was sitting on the concrete platform outside the entrance of their house, leaning against the wall. By all appearances, he was in deep distress, so much so that someone came and greeted him repeatedly without him even hearing, until the person tapped him on the shoulder and said, "Come on, Abdallah, what kind of deep thought is this? I have been greeting you and you didn't hear me."

The one called Abdallah said, "Uhum, Umar. Isn't it only natural that you see me deep in thought? You know my situation better than anyone else, so I am bound to think."

"That is true, my friend, but you ought to ease up so you don't bring another problem upon yourself," said Umar.

"I am trying to ease up, Umar, but the matter has simply overpowered me, I swear."

"May God be capable for us and bring us a way out."

"Amin," said Abdallah.

Then Umar said, "How come you are just sitting here? Do we not have anywhere to go today?"

Abdallah managed a smile that barely touched his face and said, "We certainly have somewhere to go, except that there is no money. I was just thinking that if I managed to get some money this morning, I would provide something for Inna and the others to eat, but behold, all doors are closed."

Umar fell silent, studying his friend, and then said, "Get up, let's go."

"Where to?" said Abdallah.

"You are going to walk me to the roadside."

"Very well," he simply said, as they stood up and set off.

Chatting along the way like the friends and confidants they were, they finally arrived. Umar pulled to a stop at the front of a tea seller's shop.

Abdallah looked at him and said, "What are we going to do here?"

"Just stay and watch the show," was Umar's only reply. He walked around, spoke to the tea seller, and came back to tell Abdallah, "Bismillah," pointing him to a chair where no one was seated.

Without objecting, he sat down. They remained seated there for about five minutes without either of them speaking, until the tea seller brought their order. It was tea prepared for a poor man's budget, accompanied by bread.

Abdallah opened his mouth to speak, but Umar cut him off, "Shut it, Ustaz. I don't want any complaints. Eat your food," Umar finished as he pulled his own cup toward himself.

There was nothing Abdallah could do, because he truly hated to see his friend upset in the slightest. He pulled his cup, said Bismillah, and began to send food down into his system—seeing that his last meal had been since the morning of the previous day.

After they had settled down, Umar paid the tea seller, took a nylon bag from his hand, and they set back on their way.

"Umar, I do not know with what mouth I can thank you. Thank you for the help you keep giving me. May God reward you with goodness, and may God show me the day when I can make you happy in return as well."

"Amin. Abdallah, I do not need thanks from you. How could I ever come into money and manage to spend it without you? That is simply impossible."

"I must thank you, my friend. Aside from you, only my mother truly understands what ails me."

"Uhum," Umar simply said, because he knew Abdallah was speaking the truth.

With that, they reached the entrance of Abdallah's house. Both of them entered together with greetings.

Mama was sitting in the courtyard with a young lady; they were seated on a mat, each wearing a hijab. Apparently, they had just finished performing their prayers (Salatul Duha).

The young girl answered their greetings because Mama was busy making supplications.

"Good morning, Yaya Umar," said the young girl.

"Fine, Hafsa. How is the house?"

"Fine," replied the girl called Hafsa.

Right at that moment, Mama said, "Welcome, Umar." He smiled and said, "Hello, Mama. Did you wake up well?"

Mama answered him with, "Very well."

Then he turned to Hafsa and said, "Take this bag and go prepare it."

Hafsa took the nylon bag and headed into their small kitchen.

It was only then that Abdallah spoke up, "Haba, Umar! You yourself do not even have this money, yet you keep putting yourself through hardship."

Umar scrunched up his face and said, "Just because I did something for my mother, you call it hardship? Well, I am seeking blessings." The way he finished his sentence made it seem as though he was angry. Before they knew it, they heard him saying, "I leave you in the protection of the Almighty."

Naturally, Abdallah bolted after him. With great difficulty, he managed to persuade him to stop and listen. There, Umar apologized to him and explained where he had gotten the money.

"One of my sheep has been unwell since yesterday. This morning, seeing that I was going to suffer a total loss, I slaughtered it and took it to the market for nothing. The butchers bought it for nine thousand," he finished with a hint of bitterness.

"But Umar, you have responsibilities," said Abdallah.

"Look, I divided the money into three parts: I gave two parts to Umma and kept one for myself and my friend."

Abdallah heaved a sigh of relief and said, "May God bless the money."

"Amin," said Umar, and then they dispersed into town.
