She was lying on a thick, luxurious cushion in her living room, watching a Korean film with great enjoyment and calm. Completely relaxed, she fixed her gaze on the TV and smiled. Every corner of the living room was spotless and gleaming, as if it had just been newly created because of its cleanliness. The gentle hum of the air conditioner mixed with the enchanting fragrance of strong perfumes that filled the room with comfort for anyone inside. Her laptop and phones lay scattered beside her. The way she sat there, relaxed and entertained, would make anyone believe she had no worries left in the world.
Hearing the movement of her husband coming out, she quickly got up with a warm, captivating smile and walked toward him, saying,
“You’re already out?”
He glanced at the expensive wristwatch on his hand and smiled back at her.
“It’s getting to 9:00 a.m., Hanifah. I’m already late, and I told you since yesterday that the meeting is at 10:00 a.m. But you know how you delayed me. Mahi is waiting for me, so just leave your breakfast—thank you. Please have lunch prepared for me before I return.”
She laughed and said,
“Sure! But even if you come back and don’t find me, the food will be ready. I’m going to meet Rasi’ah about our Cyprus trip…”
He gave her a side hug and kissed her forehead, then hurried off, saying,
“Let’s catch up on the phone, Hanifah. Mahi keeps calling me.”
“Okay, bye.”
She watched him until he disappeared from sight, then smiled and returned to the cushion to continue watching the TV.
Farooq
At around 1:30 p.m., after returning from the Zuhr prayer, they were eating lunch that Mahid had ordered from his house. He looked at Farooq and said,
“I never thought the meeting would go this smoothly, wallahi. From the way those people seemed when they first arrived, I thought it would be difficult.”
Farooq laughed and replied,
“That’s the challenges of life. We must always plan how to deal with our business partners. Along the way, you must be prepared to handle setbacks whenever things don’t go as expected. At first, they didn’t seem easy to deal with, but look at how we ended with them.”
Mahid nodded and said,
“That’s true. Let me quote what a Western scholar once said: ‘Do not judge a book by its cover.’ By the way, where is Madinah? It’s been two days.”
Farooq let out a soft sigh and smiled.
“Madinah is doing well, Mahi. I’ve been missing that old one for the past two days, wallahi. Work hasn’t allowed me to go see her, and she’s stubbornly refusing to come to Abuja. She says she won’t stay with me.”
Mahid looked straight into Farooq’s eyes and said confidently,
“Farooq, why would she stay with you? Living with you and Hanifah together wouldn’t work. If you had children, maybe she would stay because of them or at least visit often.”
Farooq scoffed and said,
“Children? It’s not about children—she just doesn’t want to come.”
“Farooq! Even if Madinah doesn’t say it, I know deep in her heart she wishes to see your children in this world. Seven years of marriage! At least think carefully about this. You’re the only one she truly relies on. I know nothing would make her happier today than seeing you with children…”
Farooq raised his hand, signaling he didn’t want to continue the conversation.
“Mahi, please! Let’s drop this topic. Hanifah is enough for me in this life, together with Madinah. I lived alone in my own world until I found Hanifah. There’s no happiness she hasn’t given me. There’s nothing we’ve ever wanted that we didn’t have…”
Mahid stood up abruptly and slammed his spoon onto the plate of food he had barely touched, clearly upset.
“Farooq, stop telling me nonsense. What is the benefit of marriage without children? The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) told us to marry and have children so he will be proud of our numbers on the Day of Judgment. He also told us in a hadith that when a person dies, all his deeds end except for three things that follow him to the grave. After burial, all return except one that remains with him—do you know what that is? His deeds, whether good or bad. And the things he leaves behind on earth that continue to benefit him are: ongoing charity, a righteous child who prays for him after his death, and knowledge he left behind for people to benefit from. Tell me, if you don’t have children, where will you get a child who will pray for you after you die? I’m calling you loudly—leave this foolish, foreign mindset you’ve adopted before it’s too late and have children. Children are the joy and comfort of their parents if they grow on the right path.”
With that, he gathered his things and turned to leave the office.
