“You’re the one who said it, and look, I bought it for you for four thousand five hundred, just like that.” 🙄
So said A’indo.
Hajiya replied, “Who told you that a phone case is the same as a SIM card? It’s my own foolishness for sending you. If not for madness, who sends you to buy this useless big rope-like thing saying you want to start saving? Saving, as if you’re some new bride. Now you’ve caused me a loss.”
“Please Hajiya, send me again tomorrow so I can get change and buy a small container—even if it’s just twenty naira—so I can start saving. Before the year ends, when my ram comes…” 😟
Rabi’u Daudu came into the sitting room because he is the house cook. He’s a very effeminate man—when you see him, you’d think he’s a woman the way he sways his waist. When A’indo arrived earlier, he had gone on leave. He’s very good at cooking, which is why Hajiya can’t let him go. He came back late last night and heard all about A’indo. He brought Hajiya some juice and met them in the middle of their discussion. Holding his waist with one hand after placing the juice down, he began to act dramatic and said:
“Ahhh, different towns, different people! What kind of trouble is this?” he said, pushing his backside out, rolling his eyes and clapping his hands in mock amazement. “Hajiya, what kind of things do you bring here? Why did you go and bring this one today? God forgive me, the person looks like someone poured her out in a hurry. Honestly, you’ve suffered a loss. She’s disgraced us women, truly. Why did you go and bring this fake one into the house? Instead of sending her to buy recharge cards, you sent her and she brought back phone cases. Hajiya, sorry, you’re really going through it.”
He said all this while moving his waist and turning, giving A’indo a look.
A’indo stared at him and held her jaw in shock. “So Hajiya, you’ve gathered a group of mad people in this house? I haven’t even finished seeing everything yet. God forgive me, what have I gotten myself into—and there’s even another one!”
She turned her full attention to Rabi’u Daudu.
Rabi’u frowned, clearly offended. “Oh, so you see me like this and you’ll call me mad? I’ll show you! I’ll strip us both and let’s see who people will stare at. You’re calling me crazy and calling me ‘somebody’? God forgive me, you’re the mad one yourself.”
“Hey, don’t fill my ears with useless talk. All of you are troublesome. And you—I’m warning you. The day you annoy me too much, you’ll leave this house. Look at you, little girl, no neatness, no order. I’m starting to believe you really have a mental problem.”
“Hah! Honestly, Hajiya, you’re right—number one mad person,” A’indo said, grinning widely. 😁
Rabi’u Daudu laughed and looked at A’indo. “Hah! Hajiya, you’re really suffering. This one needs serious spiritual treatment.” 🤣
After saying that, he walked away with a feminine sway of his hips. A’indo watched him with her mouth open until he left the sitting room, then burst into laughter. She moved closer to Hajiya and said:
“Hajiya, is that one really like that? Honestly, I think he’s also a bit touched. If he’s not, what kind of man walks like that? Look, Hajiya,” A’indo said, imitating his walk. “What man walks like that unless something is wrong? Well, Hajiya, I’m not the only one who needs a husband—he does too.”
“And Hajiya, please tell the master of this house to walk slowly. Otherwise he should be careful, because I think he’s about to give birth. The other day he even fell, but thank God the babies didn’t come out. Please tell him to walk carefully when he goes out, he’s always in a hurry. He shouldn’t go and lose the babies in his stomach and you people will lose your children. I’m serious, I even asked one of the workers the other day when Alhaji would give birth. Because Alhaji is handsome, but he has a big belly that leads the way when he walks.”
Hajiya shot her a fierce look and said, “A’indo, when will you calm down and use your sense? And you’re talking about my husband like this? Be careful before I deal with you.”
“Yesterday or the day before yesterday, insha Allah, I’ll behave,” A’indo replied, trying to act composed.
Hajiya shook her head and got up, leaving her there.
A’indo stayed in the sitting room and began watching an American film that was on. Suddenly she widened her eyes when she saw two men fighting on TV—one sitting, the other beating him. What did A’indo do? She placed her hands on her head and screamed so loudly that everyone in the house heard:
“Oh my God! Please come! Don’t let there be a murder! Hajiya, come and separate them—he’ll kill him!”
Hearing the scream, Hajiya ran out in panic, and the rest of the household rushed in too. When they reached the sitting room, they saw A’indo with her hands on her head, crying, thinking the man on TV had been killed. Everyone stared at her in annoyance once they realized she was reacting to the television. Hajiya arrived and said, “Who is fighting?”
A’indo, her face wet with tears, said, “You’re only coming now after the killing has happened. So in this house someone will be killed and you won’t come to save him? There he is—go and carry the body and bury him!”
