From the depths of her heart, Failusha felt a wave of relief and pleasure. Without waiting for her response, he lifted her up and headed toward the bathroom. He bathed her gently with warm water, caring for her tenderly. She clung to him, making small whimpering sounds—telling him where it hurt, here and there. Alas, how the world turns! “Alright, I’ve heard you. Get up and go to bed,” she said, pulling Rukayya to her feet.
They all stood up and went to their rooms, while she headed to her own room. As soon as they entered, Munira pulled Rukayya aside and said,
“Sometimes, when Mama is acting a certain way, you’d swear she truly loves us…”
“Does Mama not love us, Anty Munira?”
“She loves us only because everything done in this house is decided by her—didn’t you hear? If she doesn’t say something should be done, then it won’t be done. And whenever she speaks like that, Umma obeys her like a servant.”
Rukayya said nothing further, because she did not fully understand where Munira’s words were leading. But in that house, it wasn’t only Munira and Mubarak who noticed the way Mama looked at them.
